Chairman Lamar Smith (R -Texas) and Leahy have worked closely ensure the passage of patent reform and appear likely to extend that cooperation to online piracy. The Obama administration for its part has urged Congress to accelerate the legislative process, noting that additional authorities for law enforcement agencies could help prevent further piracy. A recent list of legislative recommendations from White House Intellectual Property Enforcement Coordinator Victoria Espinel included controversial measures such as expanding federal wiretapping statutes to include copyright offenses and mandating longer prison sentences for offenders. With leaders in both parties and the White House all marching in lock step toward the need for increasing enforcement efforts, the small but vocal opposition appears unlikely to gain enough traction with its warnings of potential censorship to derail the legislative momentum. But supporters are quick to remind opponents that most Americans still don’t regard viewing copyrighted content online illegally to be a crime in the same manner as stealing or buying bootlegged DVDs. “Unfortunately, the problems we are discussing have a larger social and cultural dimension –the sad truth is that many people don’t see the download on their computers of a camcorded movie currently playing in theaters as stolen property,” Conyers said. Boehner & Reid will become bywords of contempt to our descendents.You would think that when we are hurtling towards bankruptcy we could agree that there is no such thing as "a right to ride on a train".Yet not only are we funding Amtrak,we are subsidizing the construction of a new high-speed rail system.At this point, I have no doubt budget hawks will argue that the amount of money spent on Amtrak is trivial compared to that on Entitlements.This,ironically,is the same argument made by the supporters of all these "small" government programs."People say we need to balance the budget on the backs of (insert beneficiary of government program x here),but the truth is that Government program x provides a valuable service for millions of Americans who need it,& eliminating it would save only a pittance out of the deficit.True savings,can only come with Entitlement Reform etc."
It is true that the amount spent on all these "small" programs,from Amtrak to the "Corporation" for Public Broadcasting to Ethanol subsidies,COMBINED, is dwarfed by what is spent on Entitlements.It is also irrelevant.Does anyone actually believe that we will reform Entitlements--which feed,clothe,& provide medical care for tens of millions of people--if we cannot agree to eliminate the "right" to a government subsided railroad?The Welfare State which began with the cry...."How can you say "Let them starve!"....now says..."How can you deny funding for Amtrak!Riding trains feels good".
It is in this context that Reid is babbling about "extreme cuts".And it is in this context that Boehner is considering appeasing him.(And before you say "What about Bush...."
I would say, yes.Bush,and almost everyone else before him helped to dig this hole.I am not singling out Democrats.But that will not alter the balance sheets.)
When the spine of our economy is broken.When our country is finished.When there is mass hunger due to hyperinflation.Then our descendents will look back at Boehner & Reid,& the talk about "extreme cuts",& laugh.Bitterly.Through tears.And curse us.We must fight.The future of our country depends on it.
