VIENNA (Reuters) - Iran unloaded nuclear fuel from its first atomic power plant last month, a United Nations report said on Friday, a few months after the Russian builder said the long-postponed reactor was operating at full capacity.

The Bushehr plant is a symbol of what the Islamic Republic says is its peaceful nuclear ambitions, disputed by the West, and any new hitch would probably be seen as an embarrassment both for Tehran and Moscow, whose experts help run it.

The transfer of fuel assemblies from the reactor core to a spent fuel pond meant the plant was shut down, a diplomat familiar with the issue said. "It was certainly not foreseen, that's for sure," he said.

The reason for the unexpected move was unclear but it could be a sign of a new problem in running the Russian-built, 1,000-megawatt reactor near the Gulf city of Bushehr.”....

Should the U.S. launch a military strike to prevent Tehran from acquiring a nuclear weapon as a last resort? #tcot #jcot

RRD: I wish to preface this post by noting that I believe that if Tehran's nuclear program is not stopped that we face a potential nuclear holocaust .
That said, how that threat is neutralized, whether through sabotage,or through a overthrow of the Islamic Republic of Iran by it's people,or through a military strike,is another question.

I do not believe that the matter is as simple as immediate war on the one hand, or ”containment” on the other. Containment & deterrence are not terribly effective when you are dealing with apocalyptic medievalists. But Tehran's nuclear program was delayed for months to years by sabotage. Whether we have reached a point where we must face a stark choice between bombing Tehran's nuclear facilities or "learning to live with" nuclear armed maniacs is unclear to me. Certainly the leaks on Israel's cyberwarfare program by this administration have moved us closer to that point.
War is not a lark or a game,& it should only be undertaken as a last resort, but if it does in fact come down to a war initiated by the U.S. against a non-nuclear armed Tehran ,or a war initiated by nuclear armed religious fanatics it would be suicide ( for the U.S. & Iran & Israel) for us to choose the latter.
The Iranian people are held hostage by the maniacs who rule their country, but their situation will not be improved if their dictators unleash a nuclear holocaust in the middle east.
My purpose in posting this is not to call for war,but to make the case that if we exhaust all other options,we must preserve the option of a military strike on Tehran's nuclear facilities.

American Thinker: The Case for Iran: Fighting for Freedom

I am stunned by those (particularly those on the right) who deride this outpouring of humanity marching for freedom as "more of the same." How can those who supported the Bush doctrine turn away? Some attitudes are entrenched in people and cultures, but I do not believe that people fight bullets with rocks and bricks for more of the same. They can have Shari'a rule now, without the suffering and horror that has come with the demonstrations and risking their lives. They're being slaughtered. Why are those on the right so quick to deride this powerful movement and kick it to the curb? How could anyone dismiss out of hand so courageous a movement? What is there to lose in supporting this effort? What's the downside? If they are right, nothing changes. But if they are wrong, this could be historically cataclysmic. So why help despots and the world's worst oppressors in snuffing out this movement and relegating to an historical footnote? This would undermine every position supporters of freedom and democracy ever took. Why not wait and do a gleeful post mortem? Why help the ghouls and Islamic supremacists?

RealClearPolitics - 2009: The Year of Living Fecklessly

2009: The Year of Living FecklesslyBy Charles KrauthammerWASHINGTON -- On Tuesday, Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad did not just reject President Obama's latest feckless floating nuclear deadline. He spat on it, declaring that Iran "will continue resisting" until the U.S. has gotten rid of its 8,000 nuclear warheads. So ends 2009, the year of "engagement," of the extended hand, of the gratuitous apology -- and of spinning centrifuges, two-stage rockets and a secret enrichment facility that brought Iran materially closer to becoming a nuclear power.Receive news alertsSign UpCharles Krauthammer RealClearPoliticsiran foreign policyWe lost a year. But it was not just any year. It was a year of spectacularly squandered opportunity. In Iran, it was a year of revolution, beginning with a contested election and culminating this week in huge demonstrations mourning the death of the dissident Grand Ayatollah Hossein Ali Montazeri -- and demanding no longer a recount of the stolen election but the overthrow of the clerical dictatorship.
