RRD:I have just learned that Bin Laden was unarmed.I wonder how Obama supporters in the Civil Liberties community will respond to this?Will they demand a investigation?A arrest.This also raises another question.If Bin Laden was unarmed why was he shot?Some speculate that Bin Laden was reaching for a weapon,or something that looked like a weapon,or held something that looked like a weapon.But if so,why not say that?
I have two theories (and these are only theories).Perhaps they were ordered to take him alive,not to extract information from him.But to put him on trial.Read him his rights etc.Knowing that a trial would be at best,a circus,& at worst result in his release (No I am not joking).The shooter took matters into his own hands.
The second--& more sordid--explanation,is that President Obama,(or one of his subordinates) "let it be known",that it would be preferable for Bin Laden to not stand trial.This way Obama could be praised(or at least not condemned)by his Civil Libertarian supporters,while not having to suffer the humiliation of defending a decision to put him on trial.
